Kelly’s #DryJanuary Diaries

Too much holiday fun for me!  So I”m reigning it in.  Wanna join me for #DryJanuary AND/OR #sugarfreeJanuary?  Yesterday was my first day.  I promised to keep a food diary everyday so here I go.


January 3, 2017

3:15 a.m.  Wake up!

4:45 a.m.  Coffee and a couple of slices of no-salt turkey from Deli.

12:00 p.m.  2 cups of steel cuts oats soaked in almond milk.

3:30 p.m.  2 cups of turkey chili.  It had two servings of goat cheese and a cup of pasta

3:45-5:15 p.m.  Nap

8:30 p.m.  2 TBSP of organic crunchy peanut butter.

7:00 p.m.  40 minutes on treadmill.   Burned 300 calories.

9:30 p.m.  Bedtime

Wow!  Keeping a food journal is quite the motivator when you realize a lot of people can see it.  I did way better on portion control today but was not as good on water and didn’t fit in a workout.  I had an afternoon meeting and took a nap that was too long. So here’s the “skinny” on my food today.  The #dryjanuary thing hasn’t been an issue YET…but FRIYAY happy hour is coming and that FireBall whiskey whispers.  I’ll have to come up with a list of things to do to keep my mind off the B word.

9a Banana

3p Lettuce/grilled chicken/pico de gallo

4p Apple

5p Apple

9p Bedtime

Weird day.  Cold.  Cold.  Cold.  Super tired in afternoon.  I feel like I ate too much but I kept rying to make decent choices.  Didn’t nap.  Stuck at home waiting for serviceman. In bed at 7.  Great on water.  No work out.  Tomorrow is another day.

7a 2 boiled eggs

10a oatmeal (2 packets)  Not flavored.  #basic

11p trader joe’s PB bar (130 cal)

12:30p apple

2p small caeser salad (1 tbsp of dressing)

one cup of low sodium butternut squash soup (70 cal)

4p can of tuna with balsamic vinegar and dijon mustard

with two low carb tortilla (45 cal each) 4 bread and butter pickles (40 cals)

6p Inkind Healthy Grain bar (150 cal)


 Week One…

If it takes two weeks to form a habit, I’m half way thru.  It’s been really great to get back to being more aware of what I’m taking in. Still figuring out my calorie intake and what kind of calories I need.  Only made it to the gym twice which is a bummer.  However, that’s two times more than I made it in all of December so I consider that a W.  Not looking for perfect just looking for progress.  The #nobooze was not a problem at all.  Believe it or not!!!!   Although I love me some bourbon, I’ve always preferred chewing my calories as opposed to drinking them.  Problem is that when I drink I wanna eat   All in all proud of my effort for the first week.  I lost 4 pounds!!!!! Yay me.

Got up late. Cleaned up. Ran errands. Went out to BBQ restaurant for dinner with my son so that was a bit of a challenge.  But I didn’t eat a ton during the day and tried to make best choices I could.  B on water intake. No gym. #NoBooze

2p 20 minutes on treadmill

3p Grande Skinny Vanilla latte (120 cals) and Starbucks Turkey bacon breakfast sandwich (230 calories)

5:30p Jacks BBQ: Smoked Chicken breast and wing (no skin) Green Beans and Cucumber Onion salad  (no ideas how many calories)

7p Coffee with creamer at Opry

Went into work early to get Gracie Award entry edited. Hit the gym on the way home. Burned approx 260 calories on elliptical trainer and did arms. Then went to grocery with Bren and came home to watch Packers game.  A-plus on water intake.  This was probably best nutritional day yet.

2p Wendy’s grilled chicken w/ mulit-grain bun and no sauce (300 c)

3p Almonds -1/4 a cup (170 c)

4p Kale chips (100c)

5:30 8 oz lean steak (322 c) and 1 cups of greens.

Not a great day.  I took my oldest son who is visiting to Loveless Cafe.  If you haven’t been you should.  I’m not even a biscuit person but LOVE their biscuits.  I tried to make semi good choices and small portions but I’m sure it was still a butt load of calories.  But I try to keep remembering, it’s about #progressnotperfection.

1p  Loveless:  two biscuits (no butter or jam) meatloat (no sauce) cup of cheese grits (so bad but sooooooo good)
6p  Pint of blueberries and lightly breaded chicken breast I prepared at home in a little olive oil)

Not much to say about today.  Sad my son is leaving but glad I won’t be going out to eat so much.  Yesterday was his last day and we hit St. Anejo which is one of my favorite restaurants in Nashville.  REAAALLLLy wanted a margarita but it’s a #dryjanuary. #progressnotperfection.

2p handful of tortilla chips and about a 1/2 cup of guac.

Roasted chicken and peanutt/corn/romaine salad  (no idea on cals)

5p  Rest of roasted chicken from lunch and rest of salad.

 January 23, 2017: 

Gonna move to weekly updates til I lose the 10 lbs.  I’m doing that  because I’ve started using an app called My Fitness Pal to track my calories.  And, TBH it’s a ton of extra work to also jot them down.  Overall, I had a solid week.  Still sitting at a 5 pound weight loss since New Year’s.  As you may know, I”m also participating in #dryjanuary which had been easy til last weekend.  Confession:  I had my first #dryjanuary infraction. Forgive me for I have sinned.   I had a glass of red wine when I was out with the girls.  But truly only one.  That part’s getting harder and harder.  Perhaps because the payoff hasn’t been that huge.  I am really proud of my exercising.  I have been doing Cardio Barre and holy cow!  It’s hard.   You work muscles I would certainly never work.  Thanks again for all your support.  Slow and stready wins the race.  #progressnotperfection


January 30, 2017:

Well #dryJanuary is a wrap.  Yes I’m calling it early.  I made it 28 days out of 31. But decided to celebrate with my sisters Saturday night in Louisville.  Overall, I feel good about my effort.  Lost 6 pounds.  My goal is 10.  I wanted to reign it back in after the holidays.  Still on path.  I’ll blog here and there and keep everybody up to date from time to time but I won’t be posting weekly.  The truth is that my bar is low.   When I say #progressnotperfection I mean it.  As a woman of a certain age, I wanna put good things in my body and take care of myself, but I also wanna live. I have not/nor will I ever give up, but I’m also not aspiring to be a ripped Ms. Universe contestant.   I hope to continue to inspire and be inspired by you.
